Local SEO in 2026: how to show up on Google if you have a business in Spain

If you have a business that serves customers in a specific area (a shop, a restaurant, a clinic, a studio, a workshop), local SEO is probably the most cost-effective marketing you can do this year.

Every day lots of people search Google for things like "plumber in Barcelona", "accountant Girona" or "dentist near me". And most local businesses still aren't doing the bare minimum to show up in those results.

What exactly is local SEO?

Local SEO is the set of actions that make your business appear when someone searches Google for a service near them. Local results appear in the so-called "map pack": the block with a map and three businesses that Google shows before the normal organic results.

Appearing there doesn't require paid advertising. It requires having the right elements properly set up.

Why local SEO is different from traditional SEO

Traditional SEO competes nationally or globally. Local SEO competes within a specific radius, which means even a small business can beat big brands in searches in its own town. A hardware shop in Girona can appear above Amazon when someone searches for "hardware shop near me", because Amazon has no physical shop in Girona.

That makes it the most accessible kind of SEO for small and local businesses on a limited budget. You don't need to invest in paid ads or have a high-authority domain. You need the right elements properly set up.

Google uses three main factors to decide which businesses to show in the local map pack: relevance (does your business match what the user is looking for?), distance (how close is your business to the user?) and prominence (how well known and well rated is your business online?). You can directly influence all three.

Step 1: Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business)

The first, essential step is to claim and optimise your Google Business Profile. It's free and it's what makes your business appear on Google Maps and in the map pack.

  • Make sure your name, address and phone number are exactly the same as on your website.
  • Choose the right primary category: it's one of the most important ranking factors.
  • Add real photos of your business, products or services. A profile with real photos builds more trust than an empty one.
  • Reply to every review, positive and negative.
  • Post regular updates: Google rewards active profiles.

"When someone searches for a service in their area, if you don't appear in those results, you don't exist for that customer."

Step 2: Optimise your website's on-page SEO for local searches

Your website needs to clearly state where you operate. This includes:

  • Including your town or province in your website's main title and meta description.
  • Having a "Contact" page with your full address as text (not just in a map image).
  • If you serve several towns, creating a dedicated page for each one with unique content.
  • Adding local business Schema markup: it tells Google what kind of business you are and where you are.

Step 3: Get reviews systematically

Google reviews are the number one trust factor for users and they also influence local rankings. Don't wait for customers to leave them spontaneously: actively ask for them after every completed job.

A simple way is to create a direct link to your Google review form and send it by WhatsApp or email right after finishing a job. This method converts far better than waiting for the customer to remember.

Step 4: Mentions in local directories

Local "citations" (mentions of your name, address and phone number in online directories) strengthen your location signal for Google. The most relevant in Spain are Páginas Amarillas, Yelp, Foursquare, Hotfrog and the directories of your local chamber of commerce or trade association.

What matters is that the information is consistent everywhere. A different phone number in two directories confuses Google.

Step 5: Local content on your website

Beyond mentioning your town in the meta tags, Google values content that shows real local knowledge. That means writing about topics related to your sector in your area: local customer cases, guides for your town, news from your sector in your province.

A plumber in Girona shouldn't have the same generic text as one in Madrid. Google is getting better at telling when content is authentic and local, and it penalises (or simply ignores) generic text that's copied or generated without personalisation.

  • Create a "Services in [town]" page with genuine content about the area you work in.
  • Write blog posts that answer common questions from customers in your town.
  • Mention neighbourhoods, areas or local landmarks a resident would recognise.
  • Add customer testimonials with their town or neighbourhood if they give you permission.

Common mistakes that ruin local SEO

After analysing hundreds of local business profiles in Spain, these are the mistakes we see again and again:

  • Inconsistent NAP information: Your name, address and phone number must be identical on your website, Google Business Profile and every directory. An extra comma or a different abbreviation can confuse Google.
  • Poorly chosen secondary categories: As well as your primary category, Google lets you add secondary ones. Many businesses don't use them or choose them badly.
  • Low-quality or outdated photos: Images of your premises, team and services get more clicks. A profile with five-year-old photos looks abandoned.
  • Not replying to negative reviews: A professional, empathetic reply to a bad review has a more positive impact on how customers see you than ignoring it.
  • Website without SSL (HTTPS): In 2026, a website without an SSL certificate practically doesn't exist for Google. As well as hurting rankings, it drives visitors away.

Free tools to monitor your local SEO

You don't need any paid tool to keep basic track of your local performance. These free options give you enough information to get started:

  • Google Business Profile Insights: Shows how many people saw your profile, what they searched to find you and how many clicked "directions" or called you directly.
  • Google Search Console: Free and official. It tells you which searches you appear in, your average position and which pages get the most clicks from Google.
  • Google Analytics 4: To track which local search visits reach your website and what they do next (contact you, visit your services page, etc.).

"The difference between a local business that wins customers from Google and one that doesn't is usually a matter of 5 or 6 hours of well-focused initial work, not budget."

How long does it take to see results?

The most basic local SEO actions (optimising your Google Business Profile and on-page improvements) can start showing visible results within 4 to 8 weeks. For more competitive searches in big cities, the process can take 3 to 6 months of consistent work.

What is immediate is the improvement in the information users see: a complete profile, with up-to-date photos and opening hours, looks professional from day one, regardless of ranking. And that alone increases the conversion rate of those who already find you.

The role of negative reviews: how to handle them without damaging your reputation

A negative review doesn't have to be a disaster. In fact, a business with 48 reviews and a 4.2 average inspires more trust than one with just 5 perfect reviews. Consumers are suspicious of perfection. What does ruin your reputation is not replying, or replying defensively and aggressively.

When you reply to a negative review, follow this approach: thank them for the feedback, acknowledge the problem without over-justifying yourself, offer a concrete solution and move the conversation to a private channel (email or phone). A reply like that, visible to everyone who reads the review, says more about your professionalism than positive reviews do.

Also, asking a satisfied customer to update their review after you've solved a problem is perfectly legitimate and very effective for rebalancing your average rating.

Local SEO for multiple locations: the right strategy

If your business operates in several towns or has several branches, the approach changes. Each location needs its own verified Google Business Profile, its own landing page URL on your website and its own set of local keywords.

The classic mistake is to create a single profile for the whole company and send all traffic to the home page. That dilutes the local signal. Google wants to see that each location has an independent, verifiable presence: a physical address, a local phone number and a web page with content specific to that area.

  • Create a dedicated page for each town: /servicios-barcelona, /servicios-girona, etc.
  • Each page must have unique content: don't duplicate the same text and just change the town name.
  • Include LocalBusiness Schema with each branch's specific address.
  • Link to the location pages from the menu or from an interactive map on the website.

How to measure whether your local SEO is working

Beyond being in the top 3 of the map pack, there are specific metrics that tell you whether the work is delivering real results:

  • Google Business Profile impressions: How many times your profile has appeared in searches and on Maps. Steady month-on-month growth shows the algorithm is showing you to more people.
  • Clicks on "Directions": They show an intention to visit in person. It's one of the most valuable conversions for businesses with premises.
  • Direct calls from your profile: Google Business Profile shows how many calls your profile has generated in the last 90 days.
  • Average position in Search Console: For local keywords such as "web agency Girona" or "web design Girona". If you drop, there's something to optimise.
  • Organic traffic by location: In GA4 you can filter traffic by organic source and see which towns bring the most visits.

The real competitive edge of local SEO in 2026

Many small businesses still haven't claimed their Google Business Profile, or have it incomplete or out of date. That's an opportunity for those who do look after theirs.

That means that, in most sectors and mid-sized towns, three or four hours of well-done work is enough to rank among the top local results. You don't have to compete with national chains or big budgets: most of your direct competitors simply aren't doing anything.

At Webiting we've ranked businesses in the local top 3 in sectors as different as repair shops, architecture studios, dental clinics and marketing agencies, all in towns across the province of Girona. The common denominator: an optimised profile, a website with LocalBusiness Schema and an active review strategy. Nothing more.

"Often the difference between appearing on Google Maps or not isn't the budget, it's knowing what to do."
