Your current website is losing customers: 7 signs you shouldn't ignore

Having a website isn't the same as having a website that works. In 2026, a website that doesn't convert can be worse than having none: it looks abandoned, breeds distrust and sends visitors straight to your competitors.

One of the harshest truths of digital marketing is that second chances are rare. A user who lands on your website and has a bad experience leaves and looks for another option. That traffic is hard to win back: your competitors keep it.

These are the 7 clearest signs your website needs an urgent review.

1. It takes more than 3 seconds to load

According to a Google study (2017), 53% of mobile visitors leave a page that takes more than 3 seconds to load. If your website has heavy images, unnecessary plugins or slow hosting, you're losing visits before people see anything.

You can check it for free with Google PageSpeed Insights. If your mobile score is below 50, there's work to do.

2. It isn't mobile-friendly

According to StatCounter, people in Spain now browse more on mobile than on desktop. If your website looks bad on a phone (tiny text, buttons impossible to tap, content that gets cut off), you're automatically turning away most of your visitors.

3. The design is more than 4 years old

Web design ages fast. A 2019 website unconsciously signals that the business hasn't moved on either. Users judge a company's credibility in under 50 milliseconds based solely on how it looks.

"Users decide whether to trust a business in under a second when they see its website. Design isn't decoration: it's credibility."

4. It has no visible contact form

If visitors have to hunt for how to contact you, you've already lost. The contact button or form has to be visible on the first screen, without scrolling. Every extra click you ask for reduces conversion.

5. The text talks about you, not the customer

"We are a company with 15 years of experience specialising in..." That kind of text doesn't convert. Visitors want to know what problem you solve for them, not your history. Refocusing the message on the customer can double your enquiry rate without changing anything else.

6. You don't show up on Google when someone searches for your service

A website without basic SEO is invisible. If someone searches Google for "hairdresser in Girona" or "tax adviser Barcelona" and you don't appear even on page two, your website only exists for people who already know you. It doesn't win new customers.

The real financial impact of a poorly optimised website

A slow website that's hard to use on mobile or has no visible form isn't just an image problem. It's a measurable financial problem. An example with round numbers: if your website gets 300 visits a month and converts at 0.5%, that's 1 or 2 customers a month. At a 2-3% conversion rate, it would be 6 to 9 customers from the same traffic.

Multiply that example by what a customer is worth to your business and you'll see what improving your existing website could mean over a year, without needing more visits.

7. You don't have Analytics set up

If you don't know how many people visit your website, where they come from or which pages they view, you can't improve anything. Google Analytics 4 is free and gives you all that information in minutes. If your website doesn't have it set up, you're starting blind.

How to audit your own website in 10 minutes

You don't need to hire anyone for a basic first check. Here are the quickest tests:

  • Speed test: Go to PageSpeed Insights (a free Google tool), enter your website's URL and look at the result. Below 50 points on mobile, you have a serious performance problem.
  • Mobile test: Open your website on your phone and browse it as a customer would. Is it comfortable to read? Are the buttons easy to tap? Do you have to zoom to see anything?
  • Contact test: Fill in your own contact form. Does the email arrive? Do you get a confirmation? How long does it take?
  • Search test: Search Google for your company name. Does your website appear as the first result? Does it have a suitable description?
  • HTTPS test: Your website's URL must start with "https://", with the padlock. If not, you have a security problem that Google penalises.

The real cost of a website that doesn't convert

A badly designed website isn't just an image problem. It's a measurable financial problem. Do the maths with your own figures: if your website gets 500 visits a month and converts at 0.5%, that's 2 or 3 customers a month. At a 2-3% conversion rate, it would be 10 to 15 customers from the same traffic.

If you know how much each customer brings you on average, the maths is simple: every extra customer a month your website wins is revenue you're currently leaving on the table.

"Your website isn't a digital brochure. It's a salesperson working 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It deserves the same attention you'd give to hiring a human salesperson."

How to audit your own website before calling anyone

You don't need to hire anyone for a basic first check. These checks take 15 minutes and will give you a clear idea of what's going wrong:

  • Speed: Go to PageSpeed Insights (free), enter your URL and look at the result. Below 50 points on mobile you have a serious problem.
  • Mobile: Open your website on your phone. Can you read without zooming? Are the buttons easy to tap? Does the form work?
  • Form: Fill it in yourself. Does the email arrive? Does the customer get a confirmation?
  • Google: Search for your company by name. Do you appear as the first result? Does the description make sense to someone who doesn't know you?
  • Analytics: Do you have Google Analytics or Search Console set up? If not, you're working blind.

What can be done?

You don't always have to rebuild everything. Sometimes optimising speed, improving the text and adding a clearly visible form is enough. Other times, a complete redesign is the most cost-effective option in the medium term.
